Welcome to the Fall 2020 Q&A page! With things being so different now from how they were last Fall, there are lots of Qs. While we don’t claim to be experts on much, take a look at the video on the right and browse the section below for the As we currently have. If you have any questions that aren’t answered here, please contact a staff person. Thanks!
SMALL GROUPS
Q: Are small groups still happening?
A: YES! And with gathering everyone in CCF together at once now being unrealistic, small groups are more important than they’ve ever been! Join one!
Q: Okay, but how do I join?
A: Go here!
Q: Got it. But how do I know what these small groups are about?
A: We will be posting a video very soon where you can meet the small group leaders and hear from them about their groups.
Q: Can I join more than one small group?
A: Typically, yes that is allowed, but this semester we are limiting group sizes. Because of that limit, we are asking each person to join only one group. And we encourage you to really commit to and attend the small group you choose as much as you possibly can.
services on campus
Q: Will there be services on Wednesdays and Sundays in Violette Hall 1000?
A: No. Wednesdays are canceled for the semester. For Sundays, instead of getting everyone together in Violette Hall, we’re spreading out and doing house church!
house church
Q: What is house church?
A: House church is CCF’s pandemic-friendly alternative to our normal large-group services that happen on Wednesdays and Sundays in Violette Hall 1000 during a typical semester. There will be 8 house churches — 7 of which will be made up of predetermined pairs of small groups (so be sure to sign up for one here!) — that will meet separately but simultaneously at 10:30am every Sunday morning. All house church gatherings will be masked, distanced, and outdoors.
Q: What will happen at house church?
A: These gatherings will consist of fellowship, worship, communion, and sermons (each week’s message will be prerecorded so that each house church can listen as a group). There will also be CCF-related announcements as house church since these gatherings will be acting as the new hub of CCF goings-on. So, house church is much like our normal Sunday morning services only decentralized — happening in smaller pockets spread out around campus and the surrounding area.
Q: Why are we doing house church instead of service in Violette Hall?
A: As a student organization that regularly gathers up to 200 people in one spot twice a week, we felt it especially important to be as responsible and safe as possible, as well as compliant with all Truman guidelines. While Truman’s guidelines do allow for events of up to 250 students, we did not feel that there was a way to gather that many and reasonably expect to ensure that guidelines were followed. So, while we will definitely miss some things about Wednesday evenings and Sunday mornings, we ultimately felt the wisest route was to go the house church route. And what’s more, we’re actually pretty pumped to see what God will do with this new experiment!
Q: I hear you that they're outdoors, so what if the weather is bad?
A: In the event of rain or extreme cold or some other circumstance that makes meeting outdoors impossible, we will simply cancel house church for that week. Staff will make the call and put the word out via our various communication outlets. In the even of a cancelation, though, we will still post a service order (including the Exodus sermon for that week), which we will encourage you to go through with your roommates or on your own from the comfort of your homes!
Q: Where will house churches be and how do I know which one to attend?
A: Each small group is assigned a house church for the semester. To see where your small group is doing house church, click here.
Q: What if I’m not able to join a small group but still want in on house church?
A: There will be a house church for anyone not involved in a small group, which will be on the CCF House lawn (still at 10:30am on Sundays).
Q: How long will each house church gathering last?
A: 45 minutes - 1 hour.
You Are Here (YAH)
Q: Will there YAH events this year?
A: Yes! And many of them are brand new for this year! For a full schedule, head over to the home page.
Q: So when you say 'prizes,' what exactly do you mean by that?
A: Something great that we promise you'll enjoy! New things this year that have never been seen at YAH before!
Q: Can anyone show up?
A: It depends! If you are a freshman or are otherwise new to CCF, then yes! Don't hesitate to come by! We'd love to meet you (and feed you! and do fun stuff together!)!
But if you are an upperclassman who is already involved in CCF, we really do think the world of you, but because we're trying to limit group sizes this year, we have to ask you not to come to the events at the CCF House unless a staff person has specifically asked you to come. Sorry :( But remember, we really do think the world of you.
events
Q: Will there be fall retreats?
A: Sadly, no. Our retreat locations and activities simply do not allow for the space needed to for groups of our typical retreat sizes to comply with current guidelines.
Q: What about morning prayer?
A: Morning prayer will continue daily from 9:00-9:30am in the CCF House backyard.
Q: Will sermon discussion still happen?
A: While discussion will be a component to follow listening to the prerecorded sermons each week at house church, we will still host a sermon discussion time weekly on Thursdays from 9:30-10:30am around the fire pit in the CCF House backyard.
Q: What about other events?
A: Other events will be planned for the semester — social funtimes, worship nights, service opportunities, etc — but we have an aim to keep things smaller and less formal and to maintain a policy of masked, distanced, and outdoors.
Discipleship and Relationships
Q: What do you mean by discipleship?
A: Excellent question that has a potentially long answer. In short, it is our collective effort as a community to come alongside and encourage one another to cultivate lives of faithfulness. Relationships are key at CCF. Loving God and following Jesus are hard enough alone; we see community as an essential part of this process for every individual.
Q: How do you do discipleship at CCF?
A: At CCF, this community-oriented pursuit can look any of a lot of different ways: praying together weekday mornings, worshiping together at services, serving together in the community, hearing the scriptures read and taught and wrestling with them together, rejoicing and grieving with roommates, talking honestly and vulnerably in what we call 'accountability groups,' playing games, discussing movies, sharing poetry, even collectively stepping back from media during a weeklong fast each semester. All done with the aim to foster lives found in Christ that abundantly love both God and others.
Q: So if I were to want to explore any of that, where would I start?
A: A great place to start at the beginning of the semester is to come to our You Are Here events during the first week of class. (A full schedule is on the home page.) There will be plenty of people there who would love to meet you and point you in the right direction. Otherwise, come to a house church at 10:30am Sundays beginning August 23 on the lawn of the CCF House. Or, if you're up for it, contact a staff person using the email on the staff page.
Q: What if I just want to meet someone and chat?
A: We'd love that. Contact a staff person. We'd love to grab coffee with you or introduce you to some of our upperclassmen students.
